PELLÉAS AND MÉLISANDE Debussy's only opera, Pelléas and Mélisande, heralded a new direction in the history of opera. Based on the play by Nobel Price winner Maurice Maeterlinck, Debussy created an opera where the lush, sensual music mirrors moods and emotions rather than external events.
